How to become Oracle Functional Consultant - Part1 (in SCM Domain)

Recently someone asked me this question about switching career to become Oracle Functional Consultant SCM. To benefit all others who have a similar question, here's my response.

"I want to become an Oracle apps SCM functional ,I do not have specific experience in this field .Need you help and guidance to move ahead."

And here's my response to this query:

Hi there

Here's what I would suggest you to do to become Oracle SCM Functional Consultant.

Step 1. The first thing you should do is to analyze what skills you have from your past experience in the area of SCM. It could be as a end-user working in a company on any IT system, or a previous IT support or project experience. Once you have identified those skills, you can potentially concentrate on augmenting them in relation to Oracle SCM modules such as Order Management, Procurement, Inventory Management or Advanced Planning. Another situation is that you don't have any previous SCM experience at all.

Step 2. In any case, you have to first start by learning from the fundamentals of Oracle ERP (specifically Oracle E Business Suite). Perhaps take my free course on 'R12i Oracle E-Business Fundamentals'.

Step 3. Then the next step is to identify which area you are more interested in. There are various streams in SCM, such as Order Management, Procurement, Inventory Management or Advanced Planning. Start by picking up one of the stream, say Procurement.

Step 4. So taking our example of Procurement stream, learn couple of modules that relates to purchasing cycle. For example, Suppler Management, iProcurement, Sourcing, Purchasing and iSupplier Portal.

Step 5. For a successful functional consultant role. you must also learn a couple of other non-procurement modules which integrates with procurement modules. For example, learn Oracle Payables and General Ledger as they real with Invoicing and Payment against Purchase Order, and looking after ledger for their accounting entries respectively.

Step 6. The next step is to prepare a CV and start applying for roles. If you don't have previous Oracle experience, then I would recommend you start with a role of 'Junior Functional Consultant'. Then based on the job interviews you have to keep grooming yourself until you hit the mark of getting a job offer.

So that's in summary my thoughts. Hope it will helps.
